Hortense Alciere Roselyn was born in Feliciana Parish in 1859, the daughter of Barnabe Alciere and Dominique, one of his house slaves.

She is glad her husband is happy here, but she fears for him. She does not trust the people on this island. Something about them reminds her too much of her father.
