A Writer’s Website

Saturday, April 23, 1988: It was a new apartment

I wanted a Dori Seda poster for my office and a new bedspread, and Tim wanted to look for a washer/dryer combination. After getting some money at the Solano bank machine, we drove to the Whole Earth Outlet so I could look at Image Writers — that’s what I wanted to spend my tax refund on. It was terribly crowded. Got yelled at in the parking lot by a guy in a pickup truck who thought I’d taken his space. (There was one opening up right beside me.) Tim bought a pair of headphones for the CD player. I looked at Image Writers but didn’t get one.

Ah Whole Earth — another late 20th century institution I’d forgotten. We always had a copy of Stewart Brand’s Whole Earth Catalog somewhere in the apartment. It was somewhat more entertaining than the Sears Catalog.

I wish I could remember where, exactly that outlet was. All I can recall is that it was in the East Bay, and felt like other department stores — brightly lit aisles of appliances, big and little, crowded with shoppers that day because it was Saturday and springtime and the sun was out. The washer-dryer was a bust because I had no credit history.

This entry highlights the fact that we had only just moved into the place on Tehama and were still setting up our home there.
